So you find yourself in a statistics 101 class and the teacher mentions hypothesis testing using the Chi-Square test. You are given a two by two table with counts. Okay now you have to come up with a null hypothesis. Let’s see you only have counts. How will you evaluate this two by two table? Let me makes this clear…The objective of a Chi Square table is the proportions not the actual counts. You need to establish a null hypothesis that looks at a particular proportion. For example, if you are told that the null hypothesis is p1=0.15 then your observed data is tested against this assumption. You base your null hypothesis on an established belief that is set by the scenario in your statistics problem. Now, there is a lot more to the Chi-Square test but this is a short , brief distinction of what you should be focused on while doing your homework. Good luck!
