I Don’t Know

Your average statistics course is based on the phrase ‘I don’t know’.  Why? Because you never really obtain the true answer. All of your calculations are based on estimates and approximations. Unless you have all the members of your population which you rarely do…The answer remains ‘I don’t know’. Another theme is ‘it could be this’. You try to guess at what it could be in hopes of capturing the truth. So you devise models which supposedly capture everything that embodies your truth. You identify entities which cause your truth to exist.  A truth that may be disproved by an alternative hypothesis or belief. But after all the guess work and approximations are over, you are still left with the answer ‘I don’t know’ followed by ‘it could be this’ and at the end of the semester you are left with ‘what the hell was that’.
